Five Ways to Celebrate National Love Your Pet Day

by Blue Buffalo
Did you know that February 20 is National Love Your Pet Day? According to, National Love Your Pet Day was created in the early 2000s to encourage pet owners to spend more time with their pets.

Everyone at Blue Buffalo is an animal lover, so we understand a designated day isn’t necessary to show your pets a lot of love and affection. Still, National Love Your Pet Day gives us the opportunity to do something special for our favorite furry family members! It’s the perfect day to show them just how much they mean to you.

With approximately 60 million American households with at least one dog and 47 million with at least one cat, there should be no shortage of pet pampering today. Here are five fun ways to celebrate National Love Your Pet Day for all you runners and man’s best running friend.

1. Go for a training run.
Running with your dog is a time to bond and enjoy each other’s company! Tempo runs, interval workouts or any type of run that’s an essential part of your training plan should be done solo or with a human companion. Also, be sure to follow a beginner training plan that will allow you and your pooch to progress at a safe, healthy pace when you start running together.

2. Get you and your best friend new gear.
Just as you “gear up” for a run, your dog may require some special merch for a run. Your dog’s everyday collar and leash probably won’t be secure enough, so if you’re planning to bring along your pup a lot during training, treat both of you to something sturdier and just the right length.

3. Enjoy a walking tour of your city.
There is no better way to see Pittsburgh than by foot, which is why the Steel City was recently named one of the “Top Cities in America for Runners” by Runners World and Smart Asset. Why not take yourself and your furry friend on a course preview tour through one or more of our 14 official neighborhoods

4. Try cross training together.
Just like humans, dogs need exercise for their health and happiness. Working out together means both you and man’s best friend can keep off unwanted pounds, extend your lives, and stay healthy and happy.

If you don’t have a training run or walk scheduled today, consider doing a little cross training with your canine companion instead. You’ll both benefit from engaging in a variety of exercises — doga for instance — to maximize your fitness while minimizing the risk of injury.

5. Register for the Blue Buffalo Pittsburgh Pet Walk.
The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events isn’t just for humans! If you and your mutt are training together, why not enjoy the excitement of race weekend together? Dogs, as well as cats and other pets, can join in the fun by participating in the one-mile Blue Buffalo Pittsburgh Pet Walk.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in three categories: Cutest Pet, Pet/Owner Look-A-Like and Best Costume. Plus, your registration will show just how much you love pets because proceeds benefit Humane Animal Rescue.

No matter how you decide to celebrate National Love Your Pet Day, don’t forget to treat them to something special from Blue Buffalo. We’ve got the treats pets love in healthy formulas you'll feel great about feeding! We think of our dogs and cats as family members, so we believe their food should be natural and healthy.

“Love them like family, feed them like family.” ® Everything at Blue Buffalo starts with this simple idea. In fact, this was the sole reason for starting the Blue Buffalo Company.

When the beloved Bishop family dog, Blue, faced a variety of health issues, Bill and his two sons set out to create a pet food that was made with only the highest quality natural ingredients — the kind of things a family member deserves. In a short time we have, in many ways, accomplished what we set out to do — help our dogs and cats live happy, healthy lives. And we’re only getting started.
