No doubt you’ve heard of Black Friday, Cyber Monday and maybe even Small Business Saturday. But are you also familiar with #GivingTuesday? Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday is now in its seventh year and has become a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.
#GivingTuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities. After seven years, this movement continues to connect countless, diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving.
Anyone, anywhere can get involved and give back in a way that’s meaningful to them. There’s no minimum or limit to how people can do good. That is why more than 2.5 million gifts from individuals and groups from over 150 countries helped to raise $300 million in 2017 alone!
#GivingTuesday was founded in 2012 on a simple idea - to give back - and one of the best ways to do that is in your own community. On Tuesday, November 27, we encourage you to join the movement and give back to the Pittsburgh community through the Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by Bank of America
Established in 2009, the Run for a Reason program inspires runners and their supporters to MOVE for a greater good, creating a lasting impact on our community - and themselves. Here are just few ways you can get involved on this #GivingTuesday.
Register as a Charity Runner
Let’s face it — there’s no better feeling than crossing the finish line and knowing that those miles counted for more! Register for any of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend events and fundraise for one of 37 official charities or 21 contributing charities as you train. Visit our CrowdRise page
to register for the charity of your choice today!
If you’re looking for a charity to support, consider giving local kids the gift of running through P3R’s youth program, Kids of STEEL. Click here to learn more.
If you’ve already registered as a charity runner, think of #GivingTuesday as a prime opportunity to ask your friends, family, colleagues, etc. to join you in giving back. From communicating your fundraising goal via social media or a letter campaign to hosting a small fundraising event, you can raise awareness of the cause close to your heart, engage with donors and your community, and possibly boost your donations.
Donate to a Charity Runner
More than 2,000 charity runners receive 19,000+ donations totaling over $1 million each year - with more than 90% of these funds directly benefiting Pittsburgh-based charities. Your gift is an easy but impactful way to support one (or more) of the nation’s and Pittsburgh’s most reputable but underfunded nonprofits. You will not only help a charity runner to reach his or her fundraising goal but also add to the more than $12 million (and growing) that has already been raised for hundreds of causes over the past decade.
Giving back is reward enough, but anyone who gets involved with the Run for a Reason program between Tuesday, November 27 and Friday, November 30 will have a chance at a bonus.
Charity runners who register and fundraise at least $50 will be entered to win a FREE pair of Brooks shoes. Additionally, donors who make a gift of any amount will be entered to win one of two $50 Target gift cards.
However you choose to give back on #GivingTuesday, be sure to share your act of kindness using the official hashtag to connect with fellow givers and encourage others to do the same. For more details about the #GivingTuesday movement, visit www.givingtuesday.org
