County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and City of Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto have issued a joint proclamation in honor of the 10th Anniversary of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events. They have declared Thursday, May 3, 2018
as “Running Shoe Day" in Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh to celebrate the 40,000 runners who will help to celebrate this milestone from May 4-6, 2018.
In celebration of "Running Shoe Day," the Pittsburgh community is encouraged to wear their favorite pair of running shoes on Friday. Individuals and organizations can share photos of by using the hashtag #RunningShoeDay on social media.
Here's the official proclamation:
WHEREAS, this weekend, Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh are hosting the 10th DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon, FedEx Ground Pittsburgh Marathon Relay, UPMC Sports Medicine / UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh 5K Run, Toyota Pittsburgh Kids Marathon, Rachael Ray Nutrish Pittsburgh Pet Walk, Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot, and the GNC Live Well Health and Fitness Expo; and
WHEREAS, this year’s DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon is expected to be bigger and better than ever, drawing nearly 40,000 runners and more than 200,000 spectators; the competitors will log a combined 306,760 miles during a race that also features festivals, bands and cheerathoners; and
WHEREAS, the unique race course and fun race-day activities put together by the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc. (P3R) are a tremendous showcase for this area; the 26.2-mile marathon course offers runners and spectators an exceptional tour of beautiful Pittsburgh by taking them across rivers and bridges, by historic sites, past PNC Park and Heinz Field, and through 14 distinct neighborhoods; this weekend’s events also allow us to show off this region’s world-class accommodations, modern transit, entertaining attractions, emerging food scene, and affordable shopping as well as our welcoming residents and great organizations; and
WHEREAS, P3R plays a vital role in our community by promoting a love of running and enhancing involvement in health and fitness activities by hosting high-quality races, events, and program open to a wide variety of ages and ability levels; thanks to its efforts, Pittsburgh is considered one of the best cities in the country for runners, and the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon received a five-star rating on MarathonGuide.com and the No. 8 ranking in the word by Active Times; and
WHEREAS, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon has an immensely positive impact on this region; since the first running of the race and its surrounding events on May 3, 2009, it has raised more than $10 million for charity, and thousands of people, including children, have become more physically fit and healthier through running; we congratulate P3R on the 10th anniversary of the marathon, and we thank all of the fantastic volunteers and participating organizations for making this weekend’s exceptional events possible.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and City of Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto, do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 3, 2018 as “Running Shoe Day” in Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh, and we are encouraging our residents to wear their favorite pair of running shoes and join in the fun by using the hashtag #RunningShoeDay on social media.
