Mayor Peduto Proclaims May 5 Running Shoe Day in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto has issued a proclamation in honor of nearly 40,0000 runners who will be running in various events of the 2017 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. Mayor Peduto is declaring May 5, 2017 as “Running Shoe Day" in Pittsburgh to celebrate the 308,760 miles that will be logged by runners during the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events, May 6-7. 

Race day offers an opportunity to ditch the car, and take a 26.2 mile tour of Pittsburgh, which was recently named the 7th best running city in the United States by SmartAsset.com

In celebration of "Running Shoe Day," the Pittsburgh community is encouraged to wear their favorite pair of running shoes on Friday. Individuals and organizations can share photos of where they are wearing their running shoes by using the hashtag #RunningShoeDay.

RUNNING SHOE DAY 
May 5, 2017 

 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Marathon was first held by the City of Pittsburgh in 1985, opening Pittsburgh’s streets & neighborhoods to thousands of runners before its suspension in 2004; and,  
 
WHEREAS, in 2009 the Pittsburgh Marathon made a triumphant return led by the hard work and determination of P3R (Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon, Inc.) and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Through their leadership the race has been elevated to the level of one of the nation’s premier running events; and,    
 
WHEREAS, today, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon is a celebration in which nearly 40,000 runners will log 308,760 miles in a dynamic run through some of Pittsburgh’s most scenic and historic neighborhoods; and,
 
WHEREAS, Race Day offers people the opportunity to ditch the car and take a 26.2 mile tour of Pittsburgh, which was recently named the 7th best running city in the United States; and, 
 
WHEREAS, in celebration of marathon weekend, the Greater Pittsburgh community is encouraged to wear their favorite pair of running shoes on Friday May 5, 2017 and join in the fun by using the hashtag #RunningShoeDay.
  
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, William Peduto, Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, do honor the great tradition of our Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, by declaring Friday May 5, 2017 “Running Shoe Day” here in our most livable City of Pittsburgh.
