Take the Corporate Challenge: Deloitte's Story

by Deloitte

At Deloitte, we aim to be the best at all that we do — to help clients realize their ambitions, to make a positive difference in society, and to maximize the success of our people. We are constantly evolving how we work and how we look at marketplace challenges so we can continue to deliver measurable, sustainable results for our clients and our communities.

While Deloitte is a global professional services firm with nearly 245,000 people in 150 countries and territories, the Deloitte Pittsburgh Practice represents approximately 640 professionals providing audit & assurance, tax, risk and financial advisory and consulting services. Due to the nature of client service, many of our professionals are usually traveling to client sites outside of Western Pennsylvania. This presents both challenges and opportunities with regard to cross service-line collaboration and employee engagement within the local practice office, as well as overall employee well-being.

To address these workplace dynamics, Deloitte Pittsburgh’s Managing Partner, Dmitri Shiry, assembled a team and undertook a process to understand what matters most to the Deloitte professionals in Pittsburgh. The results of the process were clear – our people want to network and engage while focusing on their well-being and having an impact on their community.

Two members of Dmitri’s team, Senior Managers Renée Stepnick and Alex Vaz, suggested that participating in the Pittsburgh Marathon vis a vis the FedEx Pittsburgh Corporate Challenge; as this could provide the right resources, motivation and benefits to all Pittsburgh personnel to address what they valued most. Renée and Alex volunteered to serve as the co-captains of the Deloitte Corporate Challenge team and started to brainstorm how they could take this program to the next level.

But while Renee and Alex were veteran runners of prior Pittsburgh Marathons, they quickly learned that “well-being” means different things to different people.  The duo discovered by enrolling in the Corporate Challenge, it would provide a variety of opportunities for our people to engage in different forms of well-being: pre-race events, the Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by Bank of America with a goal to raise funds for the benefit of the Pittsburgh community, or volunteer for Pittsburgh Marathon weekend events.

In addition, they took ownership of our colleagues’ well-being and planned various activities from January to April to enhance teaming, networking and collaboration. These events included:
  • Monthly training runs
  • Cross training cycling classes
  • Yoga in the office
  • Energy management training sessions
  • Lunch and learn informational sessions on race preparation
At Deloitte, our people are our greatest asset and we want them to be successful in their professional and personal lives. The Corporate Challenge provides a great opportunity to impart empowered well-being to all Deloitte Pittsburgh personnel. We are excited to have 76 runners and 15 volunteers participating in the 2019 Pittsburgh Marathon in just a few weeks!
