Important Update

We regret to share with all of you that the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon will not take place in 2020. We worked with our partners in the City of Pittsburgh, at UPMC, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania throughout this process; however, the City of Pittsburgh has — in accordance with guidance from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention — banned all gatherings of 50 or more people during the eight-week period beginning March 15, 2020, in efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. We know that this is the right thing to do to ensure the safety of our participants, staff, volunteers, medical professionals, security personnel and spectators.

We are heartbroken to have to cancel this year’s DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend. Each year, more than 40,000 runners take to the streets of Pittsburgh — including kids as young as one year old to grandparents in their nineties, and each of you has a unique story to tell. We know that many of you started training even before January first and have put in months of effort to get to race day, and now that isn’t going to happen. We understand that you are disappointed, and we’re sure that many of you are upset that this is the outcome.

We have been working around the clock to try to make things as right as we possibly can. At a high level, all of you who are already registered for the event will have two options:

1. The first is to run virtually. To take advantage of this option, all you need to do is run your race wherever you want, whenever you want. you don’t need to change anything on your registration - you will be automatically switched to the virtual version of your event and receive your medal and shirt (and Knockaround sunglasses if you are registered for a Sunday event). We promise to make this the best virtual race experience you’ve ever had, and you can find all of the details here.

UPDATE: We will ship your items to you as soon as it is safe for us to do so!

Our goal is to for 2020 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon event runners to #MOVEPittsburgh around the earth at least 5 times - that’s almost 125,000 miles! Make sure you share your virtual race on your social channels and use #MOVEPittsburgh to let everyone know about your race and how you are part of moving Pittsburgh around the world!

2. Your second option is to receive a refund of your registration. We know how frustrating it is to prepare for a race that doesn’t happen. And while it is not our policy to offer refunds, we are making an exception in this extraordinary situation for those of you who do not want to participate virtually. We completely understand how you feel, and we hope you come back to MOVE with us in 2021.

Any runner who wishes to have their race registration fees refunded will need to access their Race Roster account and edit their event registration no later than April 1, 2020:
  1. Sign in to your Race Roster account
  2. Click the blue Edit Registration button
  3. Under the Registrations Questions tab, select “Refund.”
  4. Click Save & Exit to finalize your choice.

Please note that the refund will be in the amount originally paid, less any processing fees and/or referral fees already refunded. If you are registered for more than one event, you will need to select a refund for each specific event.

You should receive your refund within seven business days.

We know that this is an unprecedented situation, and we are here for our runners. This is difficult for everyone, and we want to make this process as easy as possible for all of our runners. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please email us at info@p3r.org with any questions you have. Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we navigate this situation. Let’s #MOVEPittsburgh.

You should receive your refund within seven business days of your request.

I purchased a VIP package, photography package, Kids Marathon parent bib, Pet Walk bib, and/or will call when I registered. Will those items be refunded?
Yes, all of these items will be automatically refunded, and you can expect to receive your refund by April 1, 2020.

Thanks for offering us options, but I would like to donate my registration fees to a Run for a Reason charity rather than get a refund. How do I do that?
Thank you for wanting to donate your registration! If you would like to donate your registration fees, we suggest you request a refund and then donate those funds to an official Run for a Reason charity team!
I’m on a marathon relay team, and we want a refund. What do we do?
The relay team captain will need to access his/her/their Race Roster account and request a refund on behalf of the team. The refund will be applied to the credit card the team captain used during the registration process, and he/she/they will need to evenly distribute the refunded registration fees to each member of the team.

I’m on a marathon relay team, and we all want to run virtually. What do we do?
Relay team members won’t need to do anything other than run their legs whenever and wherever they like! We will mail each team member’s medal, shirt, and sunglasses to their respective address as they entered it in the registration process.

I was originally registered as part of a marathon relay team, but a majority of the team wants a refund and I still want to run virtually to earn my medal, shirt, and sunglasses. What do I do?
If the majority of the relay team wants to get a refund, the team captain will need to edit the team’s registration in his/her/their Race Roster account. Please note that the refund will be in the amount originally paid, less any processing fees and/or referral fees already refunded, and applied to the credit card the team captain used during the registration process.

If one or more of the relay team’s members still want to run virtually and earn their medal(s), shirt(s), and sunglasses, please email us at info@p3r.org, and we’ll help you get registered for a qualifying event.
Will my child still be eligible for the Kids of STEEL Challenge Medal?
If your child completed the 2019 Dollar Bank Junior Great Race and the VIRTUAL Ready-to-Run Challenge, he/she/they will need to complete the 2020 Virtual Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon to receive their Kids of STEEL Challenge medal.

My child participates in the Kids of STEEL program at his/her/their school. How will the virtual race work for the Kids of STEEL program participants?
P3R will work with your Kids of STEEL site coach to support your child’s virtual race if this is the option you choose. We will work with your site’s coach so that your child will receive their finisher prize, medal and race shirt through their program site or via mail as part of their virtual race experience.

I purchased a parent bib as part of my child’s Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon registration. Will that be refunded?
Yes, we will automatically refund all parent bib purchases
I’m a charity runner, and I’m not sure what to do!

You have options, too! We’ve identified a few scenarios that charity runners may find themselves in, and here they are:
  1. Charity runner who has already raised the minimum amount for his/her/their race and has received or is already eligible for refunded registration: You will automatically be enrolled in the virtual race option and receive your medal and shirt (and sunglasses if you are registered for a qualifying event). And, if you have not yet received your registration refund, you will after the next fundraising deadline on March 31, 2020.
  2. Charity runner who has NOT yet raised the minimum amount for his/her/their race but still wants to continue fundraising: You will automatically be enrolled in the virtual race option and receive your medal and shirt (and sunglasses if you are registered for a qualifying event). If you reach your minimum fundraising goal for your specific event by May 31, 2020, you will receive a refund of your registration fee. If you do not reach your minimum fundraising goal for your specific event by May 31, 2020, you will not receive a refund.
  3. Charity runner who has NOT yet raised the minimum amount for his/her/their race, does not want to race virtually or continue fundraising and instead wants a refund: You will need to access your Race Roster account and edit your registration by April 1, 2020 to let us know that you want a refund.
Please note that these options are for runners fundraising only for official Run for a Reason charities.
I received a free race entry as a prize, but I don’t want to race virtually. Can I defer that registration to next year?
All runners have the same two options: race with us virtually in 2020 or receive a refund. Since you received your registration for free, we can’t offer you a refund. You will automatically be enrolled in the virtual option, and we will still send you your medal and shirt (and sunglasses if you are registered for a qualifying event) as soon as it is safe to do so!

Can I still run the race on May 2-3, 2020 downtown on the planned course?
We can’t tell you when and where to participate virtually; however, we strongly encourage you to avoid the official race course for several safety reasons:
  1. The roads will not be closed, and several parts of the course do not have sidewalks on which you can run off the road;
  2. You will have no support: there will be no hydration stations, security, or medical aid -- you will be completely on your own;
  3. One of the reasons we had to cancel the event this year is to help facilitate social distancing - if several runners still choose to run the same course at the same time, you will be undermining the reason we had to cancel in the first place; and
  4. IF you are injured or get sick on the course and require medical or police assistance, you will be taking attention away from others - specifically those in our medical systems - who truly need it.
If you’re in Pittsburgh, you have several beautiful parks and trails on which you can run your race if you want to do so outside, and we strongly encourage all of our virtual runners to choose to run their race in a place that is safe for everyone.

Why didn’t you just postpone marathon weekend like many other similar events?
No two marathon weekends are the same, so we can’t just do what works for other events. Ultimately, we determined that postponement wasn’t an option for us or our runners.
  1. We unfortunately can’t offer every possible option to every single runner. If we were to postpone the race, many who are registered wouldn’t be able to attend on the new date, and we wouldn’t be able to offer those runners a refund. We feel that the best course of action is to make it possible for those runners who want to run their race virtually and still get all of their race gear - medals, shirts, and sunglasses - to do that. And if they don’t want to run and receive all of their gear, they can get their money back.
  2. Additionally, with only a few months to prepare, we wouldn’t be able to offer all of you the event that you have paid for and deserve, and then we wouldn’t have enough time to make next year’s marathon the event you deserve, either.
  3. And finally, our organization hosts multiple events throughout the year, including the Fleet Feet Liberty Mile in July, EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler in November, and the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race in September. We know that it isn’t fair to the participants of these and other events - or the charitable causes associated with these events - if our attention was focused on a new date for the marathon instead.
I’m hoping to earn the #RUNwithP3R Challenge medal in 2020. Do I have to run virtually to be eligible?
Yes, the 2020 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events is the first piece of the 2020 #RUNwithP3R Challenge (which also includes the Fleet Feet Liberty Mile on July 24 and the EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler (date TBD)). If a runner wants to earn the #RUNwithP3R Challenge medal, he/she/they will need to complete a virtual run as part of the 2020 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events.

I’m registered for the STEEL Challenge. Can I run both races virtually and still earn my STEEL Challenge medal?
Yes! You will automatically be enrolled in the virtual version of both the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K and your Sunday event. We’ll mail you all THREE of your earned medals, your event shirts, and your Knockaround sunglasses. UPDATE: We will ship your items to you as soon as it is safe for us to do so!
