Grab your friends and family and tackle the DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon course together! The FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay splits the 26.2 mile course into five legs of varying distances. 

Course Description

Take a tour of Pittsburgh across three rivers and bridges each with their own distinct architecture and incredible views of the city. Pass the homes of the legendary Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers and through 14 different and unique neighborhoods featuring festivals, bands, and cheerathoners that will keep you motivated and smiling all the way to the finish line! 

  • USA Track & Field certified course 
  • Boston qualifier  
  • There are 16 medical aid stations positioned along the course 
  • Water and Nuun Hydration carbohydrate + electrolyte pre-mixed drinks will be offered at 18 fluid stations along the course
  • Honey Stinger gels will be available at three locations along the course 
  • Salty snacks such as potato chips or pretzels will be available at select locations along the course

Are you planning on a warm-up run Saturday, May 2? Then join us for the annual STEEL CHALLENGE. Run the 5K on Saturday and the marathon, half marathon or marathon relay on Sunday to earn a special bonus medal!

Additional Race Information

Team captains will automatically be registered as a team member when they register, pay and create a Relay Team. Team Captains do not need to register a second time as a team member.

If you are not participating on the relay team that you are creating, you should not create the team as you will automatically be registering yourself to run and will count toward your team member maximum of five people.

The FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay course is the same as the DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon course. The two-to-five person relay offers a distance for everyone, regardless of their fitness level.

Each relay participant is encouraged to read the FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay Handbook which explains the relay process, from picking up race numbers at the Pittsburgh Marathon Health and Fitness Expo to reaching the finish line at the Relay Exchange Zone.

Travel To Relay Exchanges One and Two

Because of race day traffic and road closures, it is recommended that most FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay participants walk to exchange zones one and two from the Downtown area. 

Travel To Relay Exchanges Three and Four

Shuttle buses will be available on race day for exchange zones three and four ONLY. Shuttles will depart from Downtown on Centre Avenue, between 6th Avenue and Chatham Street starting at 6:00 AM. Click here to view the pick-up/drop-off area map. 

Plan to arrive at your Relay Exchange at least 30 minutes before your teammate's expected arrival. If you are taking shuttles, plan on a 30-minute bus ride. Shuttles will operate until the Relay Exchange zone closes.

Seeded Runners Division 

To qualify as a seeded relay team, a URL must be provided for each runner with race results meeting the following requirements:

Seeded Male = 6:30 minute mile or under 
Seeded Female = 7:29 minute mile or under 

Results must be for 5K or greater and in the 2019 or 2020 calendar year.

You must include all of your team members' qualifying URLs in one email. If you do not provide qualifying race results for all team members (as stated above) or the link does not work, your team will not receive a seeded position. The seeding deadline is March 15, 2020. You will be notified via email near race weekend if your team has been approved for a seeded position. There are a limited number of seeded spots available. Decisions will be made based on finish times and then registration date.

If you would like your relay team to be considered for a seeded position, please email info@p3r.org with the subject line “Seeded Relay Team.” 

Packet pickup is located at the Pittsburgh Marathon Health and Fitness Expo on Friday, May 1, 2020 and Saturday, May 2, 2020.

Race packet confirmation tickets will NOT be mailed. Participants are required to provide the following items in order to retrieve their race packet:

  1. Race Number* 
  2. Photo ID

*All marathon, half marathon and marathon relay participants will be able to look up their race number prior to race weekend. Race numbers are also available for look-up via the P3R mobile app under the DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon race OR by visiting the Race Number Look-Up kiosks located within the Pittsburgh Marathon Health and Fitness Expo on race weekend. 

Pick Up For Another Participant

Participants may authorize another individual to retrieve the race packet on their behalf. The individual picking up the packet is required to show (their own) photo ID along with providing the following items. 

  1. Packet pickup slip - Slips will also be available onsite at the Expo to complete in person
  2. Participant race number - Available for lookup in the mobile app, on the website or at the Expo


Registration Rules
  • No refunds or deferments of entry fees 
  • Minimum age for Marathon: 14 on May 3, 2020 
  • Paper/mail-in registrations will not be accepted after January 1, 2020
Course Rules
  • Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, baby joggers, strollers, roller skates and roller blades are not permitted on the course 
  • Headphones (iPods, mp3 players, CDs, tape walkmans, radios, etc.) are discouraged 
  • Push rim and hand crank wheelchairs are permitted on the Marathon course ONLY; no wheelchairs are permitted on the Half Marathon course.
Course Time Limits

City streets, police officers and support are contracted for specific times and cannot be extended. Some easy points to remember: all runners must be to the 16th Street Bridge by 8:20 AM, the West End Bridge by 9:15 AM and the Birmingham Bridge by 10:20 AM. 

The overall course pace is 16:00 minutes per mile. If you are unable to adhere to the permitted pace per mile, you may be asked to board a sweep vehicle that will take you to the marathon relay shuttle drop off area at Centre Avenue and  6th Avenue, which is several blocks from the finish line. If you refuse to board the vehicle, you must move to the sidewalk so traffic can resume.

If you choose to continue after the course has reopened, there will be no medical support, fluid stations or course marshals at intersections, and the course will no longer be marked. Participants after that time will not be guaranteed a time or medal.

Drug Policy

The DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon has a zero-tolerance drug policy.

Athletes who participate in DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon events may be subject to drug testing. Athletes with positive drug test results will forfeit any prize money and will be disqualified from the event in which such athlete participated. 

All participants who finish the race within the established time limits will receive a finisher medal.

Category Awards
Prizes will be awarded to the top three male, female and co-ed teams.

Award Rules
  • Awards are based on chip time, not gun time.
  • Awards will be mailed once official race results have been submitted. Please allow three to four weeks post-race for awards to be distributed.
